Newington Dance Space presents Naked Drafts Residency platform, offering dance makers and performers an exciting opportunity to work together in an open and educating atmosphere. The aim of the Residency is to build a both way benefit, where individuals can develop their interactive and collaborative skills. Over a 4 weeks period starting from 21st of July four emerging, cutting edge choreographers will be delivering workshops,  presenting their working methods and developing a scratch of an idea, which will lead into a work in progress showing at the end of the Residency.

We are looking for enthusiastic participants; professional and non-professional dancers, actors, performance artists and anyone interested in the body and performance. If You are looking to get new inspirations, skills and contacts, this is an interesting summer activity, where You can drop-in as it suits You. I am a visual artist and choreographer. I will be creating a work that will explore ways of choreographing and dancing in relation to the practice of painting and image-making. My work in the past has been musical (this piece will be using rare segments of early Baroque music), highly intricate and technical, and physically demanding (dancers will be challenged and dancing to their fullest potential). The piece will also use props and charcoal. These are all starting up points to begin the workshop. I develop my work in relation to the dancers and to the creative process we develop together.

I am a Finnish dance-maker, currently living in the UK. My work often evolves from a mix of contrasting elements and their dynamics with each other. I draw influence from Butoh, somatic movement practices and visual art.

At Naked Drafts we will be concentrating on portrayal of the self within performance space. These workshops consist of meditative exercises, movement patterning and various improvisation tasks inspired by visual and auditory images. We will also introduce clothing and props to add different sensations of the layers of an identity and experience. The aim is to create small solo dances sharing states of existence.

I am from Finland. I did a BA in Dance Theatre at Laban, London, in 2006 and currently live and work in the UK. I make choreographic work, often working with different improvisation practices and performers’ embodied experience, and collaborating with artists from different disciplines. The work has been supported and performed in the UK, Estonia and Finland.

During Naked Drafts we will do a release-based warm-up class, focusing on tuning in to the body and preparing for physical theatre work. The choreographic research will consist of different improvisation and composition tasks working with elements from shadow theatre in dialogue with presence and movement of the body, with emphasis on realising shifts of scale, perspective and narrative textures that may take place within the tasks and improvisations.

In this series of workshops we will dissect the relationship of the active body and the voice in a theatrical context. This will be the first in-depth exploration of the application in physical performance of newly-developed software, Solarference, by one its creators. The Solarference software allows us to edit sound live and is designed specifically for the voice. We will work to integrate this program into a practical approach to dance and theatre through improvisation, storytelling and play. We will work with the body, space and objects to find an organic relationship between voice, movement and technology
