More ABOUT NIA: (Neuromuscular Integrative Activity)

The Technique:

Nia is a fitness technique that combines dance movements and heart-pumping martial moves arts moves infused with subtle therapeutic techniques designed to heighten body awareness and Sensory IQ.

Nia was developed in the early 1980s by Debbie and Carlos Rosas, after they began to question the traditional models of exercise and began to craft a more holistic way of being healthy in one’s body. By incorporating mindfulness, and encouraging people to make their own movement choices, the technique forms a tool of self-discovery through movement.

Nia combines 9 classic movement forms:

· From healing arts: the teachings of Moshe Feldenkrais, Alexander Technique, and Yoga

· From dance arts: Jazz Dance, Duncan dance, Modern dance

· From martial arts: Tai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, and Aikido

Always supporting however, the Pleasure Principle: ‘if it feels good keep doing, if it hurts, stop!’

The Nia workout is generally performed in bare feet, runs for one hour and, through the use of music and movement, each Nia experience is uniquely crafted to both calm and invigorate. A Nia workout delivers cardiovascular and whole body conditioning for the body, mind, emotions and spirit.
