Butoh Workshop

with Lorraine Smith

Dates: TBC

Time: 1pm-4pm

Cost: £15/£10 concession

Butoh is a Post-Modern Japanese dance form that explores the human psyche through image-based improvisation. These introductory workshops allow the participants to explore expressive movement and creativity through embodiment of the image and distortions in the body, and are a great accompaniment to dance and performing arts based courses. Movement can be primal and wild, or slow and meditative. Open to all bodies, ages and experience, Butoh gives the participants the chance to discover their own movement, as well as having a lot of fun! These workshops will focus on learning fundamental Butoh exercises and how the dance form can inform and develop immersive techniques for performance.

LORRAINE SMITH, artistic director and choreographer of Silversmith Dance Company, creates innovative and accessible dance theatre through artistic collaborations, and co-creates interactive butoh-based performance installations with The Silent Collective. Trained in contemporary and expressive dance, Lorraine has performed in numerous dance works and has recently worked as choreographer and co-director for interdisciplinary play In the Shadows of Senghor, and will be working as performer and artistic member of the immersive museum theatre project The Last Women from January 2008.
