You must be between 19 and 25 with a strong connection to Hackney

Is this for me?

The project offers you an engaging opportunity as one of 12 young people (aged 19 – 25) living in Hackney to gain experience in the fields of heritage and the arts. There are opportunities to gain professional skills, a qualification and references which may help you secure work or further education. The project will start 11th of September and will culminate in December with a site specific performance in St Augustine's Clock Tower in the heart of Hackney devised and performed by you.

You will engage with the heritage by attending talks, walks, heritage workshops and will access site specific theatre devising workshops run by professional artists as you creatively explore St Augustine's Tower.

Many workshops will take place at St Augustine's Tower which is managed by Hackney Historic Buildings Trust: HHBT will be giving us over 32 hours of access over the 16 weeks. The performance at St Augustine's Tower will be a public event and gives you the chance for you to share your work with family, friends, arts professionals and the wider community.

This project aims to help people make sense of St Augustine's Tower and will include not only the performance but also digital media workshops and outputs which will then be accessible online.

About St Augustine’s Clock Tower

Saint Augustine's Clock Tower, Mare Street is all that remains of the old church of St. Augustine, which was built at the end of the thirteenth century. It is Hackney's oldest building, having survived when the rest of the original parish church was demolished in 1798. In 1929, Hackney Council bought the tower from the church to save it from demolition. It is an important part of Hackney's history and appears on the Borough's coat of arms. It is listed Grade I, and is therefore in the top 2% of buildings listed in the country.
